HITEK ENERGY has successfully deployed a 50kW / 100kWh outdoor energy storage system (ESS) for a commercial facility in Norway, demonstrating the growing viability of distributed battery storage in one of Europe’s most advanced renewable energy markets.

Norway leads the world in electric vehicle adoption, with over 80% of new cars sold being electric, and its grid is already powered by nearly 100% renewable hydroelectricity. However, the country’s rapid electrification is creating new challenges: peak load stress on local distribution networks, increased grid congestion during cold winter months, and volatile intra-day electricity prices that can fluctuate by more than 300% within a single day.
The client – a medium-sized commercial facility with high daytime energy consumption – needed a solution to reduce electricity costs, alleviate strain on the local grid during peak hours, and enhance energy independence. HITEK ENERGY delivered a turnkey outdoor battery storage system designed for Norway’s unique climate and energy market conditions.
Norway’s electricity market is characterized by significant price volatility driven by weather-dependent hydro generation, interconnector flows to neighboring countries, and growing EV charging demand. This price volatility creates a strong business case for energy arbitrage – charging the battery when prices are low (typically nighttime or periods of high wind/hydro generation) and discharging during peak price hours.
Additionally, Norway’s grid operators are increasingly seeking distributed flexibility resources to manage local congestion without costly infrastructure upgrades. Behind-the-meter battery storage systems like this 50kW/100kWh installation provide exactly that flexibility, benefiting both the end-user and the broader grid.
